Jo Behrens

Thank you for stopping by!  I am a Colorado Native and fellow curly girl.  I've spent most of my adult life fighting my frizz and frying my hair with a variety of flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers.  There really is a better way!  Our dry climate presents unique challenges, which is one of the many reasons I decided to specialize in curly and wavy hair.  I have been trained to cut and color hair using a variety of techniques including Head Shape Matters, Raw Curls, Curly Hair Artistry,  Deva, Cut it Kinky, Pintura highlights and Sunlights Balayage; Additionally, I am an American Board Certified Haircolorist.  I am always on the hunt for new techniques to learn and share with my clients.  My hope is together we can find solutions to your hair challenges so you can love your curls, rather than viewing them as something to be managed or fixed.  Where there is frizz, there is curl...I'd love to help you find yours!

Why does my hair have to be clean and styled when I come in?

I perform all of my cuts on dry hair.  Whether you have straight or curly hair, it is important for me to see how your hair lives on your head.  Growth patterns and problems areas will jump out at me allowing me to suggest solutions.  Pony tails crease the hair and when the hair is dirty it doesn't behave the same as it does when it is clean.  Trust me, it matters!

Why is my hair always frizzy?

Lack of proper hydration is the biggest reason hair is frizzy.  Another culprit is silicone.  Combine the two and you'll have a mess on your head, but don't worry its relatively easy to fix!

I have a cabinet full of products, will any of them work?

Maybe and maybe not.  Feel free to bring your products in so we can read the labels together and I can help you learn what to be on the lookout for.  Typically, a curly girl only needs  four products and two of those are the cleanser and hydrator.  If you can only invest in one great product, invest in a conditioner.

Why does a curly cut cost so much?

The quick answer is because it takes more time to cut and style a head of curls.  The in-depth answer is because it has been a large financial investment on my part to learn and specialize in curly and wavy hair.  In 2019 alone I invested over $6,000 in curly hair classes. In early February 2020 I'll be on the road again for a class called Cut It Kinky which will immerse me in cutting and styling African-American type curls.  Almost all of my training takes place out of state.  The bottom line is, the more I learn the more information I can pass along to you!  Win-Win in my opinion!

What type of training do you have?

Every single cut I give is based on a foundation of the Head Shape Matters patented cutting system.  In addition to being certified as a Head Shape Matters cutter, I have attended Deva Curl's Level One Inspired and Level Two Advanced Curl Specialist with Pintura highlighting classes.  I am a Curly Hair Artistry Mastery Program Certified stylist and a graduate of the Raw Curls Academy.  Most recently I traveled to San Francisco for a two day hands on class, called Cut it Kinky, which focused solely on the cutting and styling of extremely curly African-American type hair.

How often does my hair need to be cut?

This varies by client as well as the type of hair and curl, but typically once the shape you desire is achieved I will only need to see you about twice a year if you are a looser wavy/curly girl.  The factors that increase or decrease the time between visits depend a lot on you and the type of curls you've been blessed with.  Great products and effective routines are essential.  I can coach you in both of those areas!

How did I become a curl specialist?

Education and practice!  I spend a lot of time and money educating myself and practicing.  I call myself a specialist and not an expert for a reason.  I don't think I will ever know ALL the things there are to know about curly hair, or hair in general, but I'm certainly trying.  In addition to taking classes I am always reading books and articles about hair and its chemical make up and doing my best to keep up with ingredients. I'm also surrounded by a wonderful group of other curl specialists who share their knowledge.
